A domain extension, aka. Top Level Domain, or TLD, is comprised of the letters seen in the address bar after the domain name, such as '.com', or '.net'. TLDs provide a way to organize and classify domains.
The most relevant domain name extension available to any person (as opposed to being available to institutions or governmental agencies) is .com (dot com) TLDs. They are known as being the most popular, the default on the Internet, and were initially intended for commercial ventures. While the .org TLD arises great debate as a contender within Google search results, it is still up for great debate.
Other popular TLDs include .net and .biz, however, the pale in comparison to the strength of .com! The most generally used TLDs include:
